US stocks open higher 10:06 PM

NEW YORK - US STOCKS opened with small gains on Friday as confidence in the US economy grows following a strong drop in jobless claims.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 17.33 points (0.17 per cent) to 10,432.57 in opening trades, while the broader S&P 500 index gained 0.84 points (0.08 per cent) to 1,105.02 points.

Global oil demand forecast up 6:19 PM

PARIS - LEADING economies are marching surprisingly briskly into recovery, edging up forecast global oil demand this year, but uncertainty over risks of a slowdown has increased, the IEA said on Friday.

The driving effect of growth in emerging economies is turning out to be slighter weaker than expected, the IEA said.

India's industrial output surges 6:16 PM

NEW DELHI - INDIA'S industrial output in July leapt by 13.8 per cent, data showed Friday - far outpacing market forecasts - as consumer demand in Asia's third-largest economy remained robust.

The official year-on-year government figures reflected India's strong rebound from the global financial crisis and marked a sharp acceleration from June's revised 5.8 per cent output rise.

IBJ files for bankruptcy 4:38 PM

TOKYO - THE private Incubator Bank of Japan (IBJ) was ordered to halt operations and filed for bankruptcy on Friday, in Japan's first bank failure in seven years.

Government officials stressed that the move would have little impact on the Japanese financial system, however.
