PACENTRO (Italy) - THE mayor of an Italian town shaken by Monday's earthquake says Madonna has promised US$500,000 (S$750,000) to help people in need.

Fernando Caparso, the mayor of Pacentro, the mountainside village where two of the pop star's grandparents were born, told reporters on Wednesday that that he had spoken to the pop star's manager.

 
Strike forces Effel shut down

PARIS - THE Eiffel Tower was closed on Wednesday after employees went on strike to demand better work conditions and security at one of the world's most visited tourist sites.

Ticket offices at the Paris landmark were shut and staff were seen handing out leaflets in English, French and Spanish that said they were seeking improvements to visitor services and job security for staff.
