MIAMI BEACH (Florida) - ON recent New Year's Eves in South Beach, booking Lindsay Lohan and R&B singer John Legend as the entertainment would have caused a ticket stampede almost regardless the cost.

But with the economy in recession, that's not the case this year: the US$200 (S$288) individual tickets and US$1,500 VIP tables are moving slower than expected.

 
Paris defends shopping spree

SYDNEY - AMERICAN socialite Paris Hilton has declared herself a saviour who shops for the greater good in tight economic times.

In Sydney to host an exclusive New Year's dance party, the 27-year-old heir to the Hilton hotel fortune this week drew criticism for spending 5,560 Australian dollars (S$5,536) in a 40-minute shopping spree.

Sydney set for fireworks show

SYDNEY - RECORD crowds of 1.5 million were expected to kick off global New Year celebration on Wednesday with a fireworks extravaganza over Sydney's iconic harbour and Opera House.

Never-before-seen lightning, thunder and rain effects were to top the multimillion dollar pyrotechnics show, which traditionally centres on the city's world-famous Harbour Bridge.
