ABUJA (Nigeria) - MTV launches its first-ever music award program for Africa on Saturday, with acts from across the world's poorest continent nominated for prizes in the Nigerian capital.

Winners were being selected by fans sending text messages, said Alison Reid, a spokeswoman for MTV Networks Africa.

 
Actors guild to seek strike

LOS ANGELES - THE Screen Actors Guild said on Saturday it will ask its members to authorise a strike after its first contract talks in four months with Hollywood studios failed despite the help of a federal mediator.

The guild said it adjourned talks overnight with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers after two marathon sessions with federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez.

Madonna, Ritchie divorce

LONDON - A BRITISH judge granted pop megastar Madonna and her British filmmaker husband Guy Ritchie a divorce on Friday, barely a month after they announced the end of their eight-year marriage.

District Judge Caroline Reid pronounced the decree nisi in the 'quickie', or uncontested, divorce at the family division of the High Court in London.
