MUMBAI - CANDLES were lit on Wednesday for the 166 people who were killed in last year's militant attacks in Mumbai, with calls for unity to fight and defeat extremism around the world.

Local faith leaders and diplomats from some of the countries that lost nationals gathered at the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue in south Mumbai for prayers and tributes to the victims on the eve of the first anniversary.

Polanski wins bail offer 11:34 PM

GENEVA - A SWISS court has approved Roman Polanski's bail offer of US$4.5 million (S$6.2 million) to be released from prison and kept under house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss chalet.

But the Swiss Justice Ministry says it will keep Polanski in jail until it decides whether to appeal his release to the country's supreme court.

Kidnap scam bid foiled 7:50 PM

WORKING closely with the staff of a local bank and a remittance centre, police foiled a kidnap scam attempt believed to be perpetrated by an overseas syndicate.

On Monday, the victim, a 55-year-old housewife, received a call at her home from an unknown man with a heavy Chinese accent, claiming that her son had been kidnapped and demanding a ransom of $30,000.
