WORLD leaders from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) wrapped up their two-day summit on Sunday promising to integrate their economies further and find new ways to prosper in the post-crisis world.

With the United States and Vietnam committing to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership of four economies, Apec inched closer to the Holy Grail of a region-wide free trade agreement (FTA).

 
2015 aim for active ageing

A CHALLENGE is ahead for Singapore's seniors: More than half will need to be active agers by 2015.

The gauntlet was thrown down to grassroots leaders by Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Boon Heng on Sunday, who wants to drum up participation in government initiatives that promote healthlier lifestyles among those aged above 50.

Foreign buyers venture out

FOREIGN property investors are spreading their wings and venturing out of the traditional prime areas to snap up homes in other parts of the island.

A new study has found overseas buyers have become keen on districts 11, 22 and most surprising of all, 12, which is the Balestier area.

A Savills Singapore study found that districts 9, 10 and 15 have remained the top spots for foreign buyers over the past three years.

Thousands paid tribute

HANOVER (Germany) - TENS of thousands of fans joined family, friends and team mates of Robert Enke to pay their last respects to the Germany goalkeeper on Sunday, five days after his suicide shocked the country and soccer fans worldwide.

At a memorial service at the Hanover 96 ground where Enke played his club football, 45,000 people, including Germany team mates and coaches dressed in black, watched as Enke's coffin was placed in the middle of the pitch.

Thaksin opponents rally

BANGKOK - THOUSANDS of demonstrators from Thailand's royalist 'Yellow Shirt' movement protested in Bangkok on Sunday against a visit to Cambodia by their arch-foe, fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The group said it had called the rally to express outrage at the neighbouring country's appointment of Thaksin as an economic adviser and Phnom Penh's refusal to extradite him during his four-day trip there this week.
