ZURICH - TURKEY and Armenia were set to take a historic step towards reconciliation on Saturday with the backing of major powers, by signing pacts to normalise ties after nearly a century of bitterness over their blood-soaked past.

Armenian Foreign Minister Edouard Nalbandian and Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu will sign the two protocols in a ceremony at the University of Zurich at 5pm (1500 GMT, 11pm Singapore time), the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed.

Protest against skyscraper

SAINT PETERSBURG - AROUND 3,000 Russians held an angry protest Saturday against a controversial plan by state-run energy giant Gazprom to build a huge skyscraper in the country's former imperial capital.

Demonstrators held signs saying 'Gazprom go home' and 'History is worth more than money' at the rally in central Saint Petersburg, one of the largest protests in the city in recent years, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

Poland signs EU treaty

WARSAW - POLISH President Lech Kaczynski signed the European Union's reform treaty into law on Saturday, leaving the Czech Republic as the only country still to ratify the document.

Mr Kaczynski, a eurosceptical conservative, signed the Lisbon Treaty at a ceremony in the presidential palace attended by the heads of the European Commission and the European Parliament.

Pakistan army HQ attacked

RAWALPINDI (Pakistan) - HEAVILY-ARMED militants tried to storm Pakistan's army headquarters Saturday, with six soldiers and four rebels killed in an audacious attack near the capital Islamabad, officials said.

Six insurgents armed with automatic weapons and grenades shot their way through one checkpost in the garrison town of Rawalpindi, before being stopped by security forces at a second post. Two militants have fled, officials said.
