SINGAPORE - FERNANDO Alonso is determined to get a podium finish at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday and put the storm over his controversial victory here last year behind him.

The Spaniard was cleared of any wrongdoing in the Renault race-fixing row that saw his team hit with a two-year suspended ban from the sport.

 
Nuke-arms free world

UNITED NATIONS - WORLD powers on Thursday adopted a landmark resolution seeking to rid the planet of nuclear arms at an unprecedented Security Council summit hosted by US President Barack Obama.

'Although we averted a nuclear nightmare during the Cold War, we now face proliferation of a scope and complexity that demands new strategies and new approaches,' Mr Obama told the 15-member body.

100 feared dead

RAIPUR (India) - RESCUERS searched desperately for survivors Thursday in the rubble of a giant chimney that collapsed in central India, with a top union official saying more than 100 workers were feared dead.

Labourers had completed 100 metres (330 feet) of the planned 275-metre chimney when the entire structure came crashing down in bad weather on Wednesday.

Wives denied body

SOLO (Indonesia) - TWO Indonesian wives of slain militant leader Noordin Mohammed Top have been blocked by police in their bid to bury his body on Indonesian soil, their lawyer said Thursday.

Munfiatun and Arina, who both married the 41-year-old as he was on the run over a string of deadly bombings, were denied access to his body at Jakarta's police hospital, lawyer Mohammed Kurniawan told AFP.

'Tiwary not acting'

SUMMING up for the defence, Ram Puneet Tiwary's lawyer gave a dramatic performance, calling his client's '000' call to the Australian emergency services: The 'black box' recording of the case.

After playing the seven-minute audio recording in a New South Wales Supreme Court, Senior Counsel David Dalton told the jury: 'Is that acting? It doesn't matter what I think. It just makes me angry.'
