WASHINGTON - VOWING to never falter in the pursuit of Al-Qaeda and its allies, President Barack Obama placed a wreath under rainy skies at the Pentagon in memory of the victims of Sept 11 on the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

'Let us renew our resolve against those who perpetrated this barbaric act and who plot against us still,' Mr Obama said. 'In defence of our nation, we will never waver.'

Renault team sues Piquet 7:04 PM

MONZA (Italy) - RENAULT have launched criminal proceedings against Nelson Piquet Junior and Nelson Piquet Senior for making false allegations and blackmail in relation to claims that the team conspired to fix the outcome of the 2008 Singapore GP.

Renault have been called to appear at an International Motoring Federation (FIA) World Motor Sports Council hearing on Sept 21 in Paris to explain events that took place in Singapore prior to the race in which Fernando Alonso was victorious, having benefitted from an early pit-stop before his then team-mate Piquet Junior crashed.

Chen gets life for graft 5:18 PM

TAIPEI - A TAIWAN court on Friday sentenced former president Chen Shui-bian to life in jail for corruption at the climax of a trial that the pro-independence leader slammed as a political vendetta.

Chen, the first former Taiwan leader to be put on trial, boycotted the verdict in the Taipei district court, which also handed a life term to his wheelchair-bound wife Wu Shu-chen.

Woman cuts friend's belly 5:35 PM

HONG KONG - A HONG Kong woman who faked her own pregnancy has pleaded guilty to cutting open the belly of a pregnant woman and trying to remove her baby. The infant later died.

Leung Sin-ting, 27, pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of manslaughter and inflicting grievous bodily harm on the expectant mother, court spokesman Brenda Yu said on Friday.
