292 killed in Morakot 11:14 PM

TAIPEI - TAIWAN'S government on Monday confirmed that 292 people were killed and 385 missing after Typhoon Morakot struck the island and caused its worst flooding in half a century earlier this month.

Those still unaccounted for include 311 from the southern village of Hsiaolin, the National Fire Agency said.

With the hope of finding bodies fading, an increasing number of people still hunting for loved ones decided to list them as dead rather than missing.

NEW YORK - READER'S Digest Association Inc, publisher of the iconic general interest magazine that began gracing American homes in 1922, on Monday filed for bankruptcy protection as it faces falling print circulation in the Internet age and looming debt payments.

Known for its heartwarming stories about American life as other publications moved toward edgier fare, the company's flagship Reader's Digest magazine has seen its US circulation drop from a peek of more than 17 million in the 1970s to just above 8 million last year.

KARACHI - PAKISTANI police have arrested 13 men accused of plotting attacks across the country, with one cell planning to disrupt Ramadan and the other targeting economic hub Karachi, police said on Monday.

In Karachi on Sunday, police held seven members of banned Al-Qaeda-linked extremist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi on suspicion of planning suicide attacks in the southern port city and capital of Sindh province.

SEOUL - A US official charged with enforcing UN sanctions on North Korea sought South Korea's continued support during talks on Monday even as Pyongyang makes conciliatory moves after months of military grandstanding.

A high-ranking North Korean delegation led by close aides of leader Kim Jong Il sent to mourn a former South Korean leader met President Lee Myung Bak on Sunday and delivered a message from the North's leader in their first formal communication since Mr Lee took office about 18 months ago.
