ALL religious groups in multiracial Singapore must exercise tolerance and restraint and adopt 'live and let live' as a guiding principle.

Making this call in his National Day Rally speech on Sunday night at the University Cultural Centre, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged Singaporeans against taking racial and religious harmony for granted, stressing that some basic requirement must be observed to keep the nation peaceful and harmonious.

 
Well-placed for pickup

SINGAPORE is well-positioned to pick up strongly when the global economy recovers because of its comprehensive and decisive response to the downturn, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday night.

Giving an update on the economy amid signs of global recovery, Mr Lee said the economy is in a 'deep trough', but Singapore is coping well.

Engage other races: PM

AS THE Malay-Muslim community builds itself up to overcome the economic downturn, it must remain engaged with the other races.

This reminder came from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his Malay speech at the National Day Rally at the University Cultural Centre on Sunday evening.

Tremors shake S'pore

EARTH tremors were reported in several parts of Singapore at about 3.40pm on Sunday.

Police and the Singaopore Civil Defence Force said they have received about 31 calls from the public reporting the tremors. There has been no reports of injury no law and order concerns so far.

Women to join Iran cabinet

TEHERAN - IRANIAN President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday he plans to appoint at least two women ministers to his new cabinet, a first in the Islamic republic.

He said in a live television interview he would propose Fatemeh Ajorlou for the welfare and social security ministry and Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi for the health ministry.
