WHEN the clock struck 8.22pm on Sunday, Singapore stood still as its people recited the national pledge.

The unique moment, which lasted 30 seconds was the first effort of its sort in the nation's history, and allowed those from Changi to Jurong West to say the words out loud, either alone or in groups.

In the heartlands at Bishan, 10 km from Marina Bay, about 100 SMRT staff and public citizens stood out and recited the pledge. The solemn moment broke into a celebratory mood as the participants yelled 'Happy Birthday Singapore!'
