ALMOST twice as many hotspots have been detected in Sumatra as the same time last year and the year before.

Satellite images on Tuesday showed 2,248 hotspots in Sumatra, compared with 1,229 from the same time last year and 1,218 in 2007. It even surpassed the 2,031 hotspots in 2006, the last time that smoke haze hit Singapore hard.

Mr Bernanke, delivering his semiannual economic report to Congress, cited 'notable improvements' in financial markets and a somewhat brighter economic outlook but considerable risks led by high unemployment.

KPE traffic volume jumps

JUST 10 months after it was fully opened to traffic, Singapore's newest expressway, the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), is filling up.

Checks with the Land Transport Authority showed that the average daily two-way volume is now around 63,500 vehicles - 30 per cent more than the 48,900 recorded last September, when it opened.

3 more patients in ICU

THREE more H1N1 patients with underlying medical problems have been admitted to intensive care units.

Two of them are in critical condition, said the Ministry of Health on Tuesday.In a statement, MOH said the three are:

  • A 46-year-old female foreigner with hypertension and kidney disease on dialysis who sought medical treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital's Emergency Department on Sunday. Before that, she had sore throat and fever for a week.

  • Goodyear won't be CEO

    Mr CHARLES 'Chip' Goodyear will not become the chief executive of Singapore state investment arm Temasek Holdings, after he and Temasek mutually decided not to proceed with his appointment.

    In a statement, Temasek said that both the Temasek board and Mr Goodyear have concluded and accepted that there are differences over certain strategic issues that could not be resolved.
