SINGAPORE will soon be home to Asia's largest 'six star' columbarium, according to a Malaysian company which is investing $50 million to renovate an existing facility at Choa Chu Kang.

The facility Nirvana Memorial Singapore will have space for up to 15,000 single-urn-lots in the first phase of development, spread across six suites. The first phase of the 11,200 sq m building will be completed at the end of next month.

On track for more degrees

IN SIX years' time, Singapore can provide university places for 30 per cent of pupils in any Primary One year.

Education Minister Ng Eng Hen gave this assurance on Monday when fears were expressed about the Government's decision to reduce the number of undergraduates in the yet-to-be-named fourth university.

Fiasco resolved fairly

THE structured notes fiasco may have caused thousands to lose their investments but it was resolved fairly and without political pressure, said Trade Minister Lim Hng Kiang on Monday.

'While not all investors may accept the case-by-case approach, we believe it is the correct approach that is fair to the individual investor,' said Mr Lim, who is also deputy chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Two new bills tabled

TWO Bills amending the Legal Profession Act (LPA) and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act were introduced in Parliament on Monday.

The changes to the LPA include replacing the law pupillage programme - in which fresh graduates have to do a stint at law firms - with a practice training period of at least six months before a new law graduate can be admitted to the Bar.

Public 'No' to live music

THE Urban Redevelopment Authority has nixed a plan to allow live entertainment in pubs and restaurants near residential areas, after most respondents in a public survey rejected the idea.

The plan, announced last year, was meant to inject vibrancy into landed neighbourhoods by cutting down on red tape for local business owners.
