BUSINESS confidence among Asian businesses is recovering from the lows since the fourth quarter of 2008, according to HSBC's study of more than 3,400 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), of which 2400 are Asian.

Among the Asian economies, the export-oriented economies which were harder hit by the economic downturn registered lower levels of business confidence.

 
Woman seriously ill

IN A first here, a person with no underlying conditions has been taken seriously ill with Influenza A (H1N1).

The victim is a 22-year-old woman who is six months' pregnant. She developed pneumonia and tested positive for H1N1 at a private hospital.

She was admitted to KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) on Monday.

Another malaria victim

AN outbreak of malaria which has infected more than 20 men may not be over yet, with another victim diagnosed in the Mandai/Sungei Kadut area.

It is believed that the man became sick earlier this month. But he was also in Malaysia recently, so authorities are trying to establish if he caught the disease here or was bitten by the parasite-bearing Anopheles mosquito while overseas.

No more measures needed

THE Singapore economy has stabilised and there is no need for further stimulus measures currently, said Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang on Wednesday.

He noted that none of the 'major economies' are contemplating a second stimulus package 'anytime soon'.

Fatwas on legal issues

THE legal committee of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) will continue to issue legal decrees - or fatwas - to guide Muslims on complex legal issues, said the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Dr Yaacob Ibrahim on Wednesday.

'Our institutions have to evolve as the environment changes,' Dr Ibrahim told an estate planning seminar organised by the Muslim Financial Planning Association and legal and business information provider LexisNexis, adding that it was a 'good move' to enhance awareness of financial planning.
