HAVE miles, will travel - this seems to be the current motto for credit card holders in Singapore. With the recession hitting people hard in their pockets, more are cashing in their reward points from their credit cards for air tickets.

Citibank's cards marketing director Alice Fok said redemption of points for travel purposes has more than doubled in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period last year.

 
Teen offers apology

THE teenager who dealt a fatal kick to his taekwondo opponent last week showed up at the wake on Sunday night to pay his respects.

Accompanied by his parents and sister, the 15-year-old approached the mother of the late Vincent Tan mother, sombre, to offer his apology.

Webber's maiden F1 win

NURBURGRING (Germany) - MARK Webber secured his maiden Formula One victory and Australia's first since 1981 when he led team-mate Sebastian Vettel home in a triumphant one-two for the Red Bull team in Sunday's German Grand Prix.

Webber, in his 130th F1 race after eight years in the sport, started from his first pole position and overcame a drive-through penalty for a first lap collision on his way to a spectacular win at the circuit in the Eifel mountains.

Injury count rises to 1,680

BEIJING - THE number of people injured in ethnic violence in China's Urumqi has risen to 1,680, state media reported on Sunday, quoting the regional government.

The figure was a marked increase from the 1,080 injuries reported on Tuesday by the official Xinhua news agency.

Social faultlines to bridge

SINGAPOREANS are becoming more religious, and this could create social faultlines that the People's Association must bridge, its deputy chairman and Minister Lim Boon Heng said at a grassroots seminar on Sunday morning.

Other social trends which the PA must respond to, ahead of its 50th anniversary next year, are the income divide and surge of new immigrants, Mr Lim said in a speech addressing some 800 grassroots leaders.
