PARIS - MORE than 2,000 people are still in detention and hundreds more are missing in Iran since a government crackdown on protests over a disputed presidential election, the FIDH human rights group said on Sunday.

'According to the latest information we have, more than 2,000 people have been arrested and are currently in detention,' said Mr Karim Lahidji, vice-president of the Paris-based International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).

 
2 schools suspend classes

SINGAPORE clocked its highest number of H1N1 cases in a day with 145 new patients on Sunday. Three of the now 599 confirmed cases are Ministry of Education teachers from Presbyterian High, Westwood Secondary School, and Hai Sing Catholic School.

To prevent a spread of the disease, staff and students who were in close contact with the infected teachers have been advised to take Leave of Absence (LOA) for seven days.

Taxis' 'disappearing' act

SOME taxis are holding back from joining the queues at Changi Airport just before 5pm on weekends so that they can collect the higher surcharges which kick in after that time.

Taxi coordinators at each of the three main airport terminal taxi stands say they have noticed the flow of taxis slowing to a trickle between 4.45pm and 5pm.

AYG torch relay kicks off

THE torch relay for the Asian Youth Games (AYG) blazed a spectacular trail across Singapore on Sunday, setting the scene for a nine-day sporting fiesta that will bring together some 1,400 of the continent's finest young athletes.

The flame, which was ignited at dawn by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, will reach the Singapore Indoor Stadium tomorrow night for a glittering opening ceremony attended by all 43 participating countries.

Police find no clue of crime

LOS ANGELES - A SECOND police interview with the doctor caring for pop star Michael Jackson the day he died yielded no information suggesting the physician committed a crime, the Los Angeles Times reported on Sunday.

The Times said an unnamed source close to the police investigation told the newspaper the second interview with Dr Conrad Murray revealed 'no red flag' indicating criminal wrongdoing or the cause of death.
