TV icon Fawcett dies 1:37 AM

LOS ANGELES - FARRAH Fawcett, whose luxurious tresses and blinding smile helped redefine sex appeal in the 1970s as one of TV's 'Charlie's Angels,' died on Thursday after battling cancer. She was 62.

The pop icon, who in the 1980s set aside the fantasy girl image to tackle serious roles, died on Thursday shortly before 9:30 am (1230am Singapore time) in a Santa Monica hospital, spokesman Paul Bloch said.

NEW YORK - WALL Street stocks swung higher on Thursday as the markets mulled a small upward revision in US economic output and mostly positive company earnings results.

SINGAPORE - WANT the good life despite the dire economy? Head east, according to a survey showing some of the world's highest-paid expatriates live in Asia and the Middle East.

A third of all expats in Russia - the highest proportion in the world - earn more than US$250,000 (S$375,000) a year, followed closely by expats in Japan and QatUSar, according to the 2009 Expat Explorer survey, commissioned by HSBC Bank International, the offshore financial services arm of HSBC Holdings.

Brazil leaves it late 4:55 AM

JOHANNESBURG - DANIEL Alves scored with two minutes left on Thursday to give Brazil a 1-0 win over South Africa and a place in the Confederations Cup final against the United States.

South Africa had unsettled Brazil with a frantic hustling game of quick challenges and tight marking from a packed midfield and attentive defence, but the substitute right back curled in a shot from the edge of the area to give his team a chance of a record third title after Ramires tumbled right on the edge of the area under a challenge from South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena.
