A NEW scheme designed to help people repay troublesome debt already appears to be reducing the number of bankruptcy applications here.

Since the Debt Repayment Scheme (DRS) kicked off just over a month ago, banks have been thinking twice before taking the ultimate measure against recalcitrant debtors.

Fierce clashes on streets

TEHERAN - WITNESSES said police fired tear gas and water cannons at thousands of protesters who rallied in Teheran on Saturday in open defiance of Iran's clerical government, sharply escalating the most serious internal conflict since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Eyewitnesses described fierce clashes near Revolution Square in central Tehran after some 3,000 protesters chanted 'Death to the dictator!' and 'Death to dictatorship!' Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, the witnesses said.

AYG footballer has flu

A MEMBER of the Philippines football team, who arrived on Thursday for the first Asian Youth Games, has been confirmed with the H1N1 virus.

The 14-year-old developed symptoms yesterday afternoon. He sought medical attention, and laboratory results confirmed his infection this morning, said organisers.
