SINGAPORE on Wednesday confirmed 17 new cases of H1N1 flu infections.

All 17 cases involve travellers returning from countries with known community transmission of H1N1. Some of these cases (51, 52, 55, 58, 62, 65 and 66) proceeded with their travel and/or meetings and social activities despite having developed symptoms.

 
COE prices up again

CERTIFICATE of Entitlement (COE) prices are up across the board for the ninth consecutive time.

COE premiums posted double digit percentage gains at the end of the latest round of bidding on Wednesday.

The COE price for cars up to 1,600cc rose 10.3 per cent to $12,899, while the premium for cars above 1,600cc climbed 24.8 per cent to $14,840.

MOH statement denied

A MINOR storm has broken out over a German researcher who caught the H1N1 virus after a trip to Philadelphia.

In a statement on Wednesday, the A*Star scientist denied that he had continued to work and socialise for a week, despite having symptoms, before he sought help, which the Ministry of Health (MOH) had said on Tuesday.

Violinist gets rare violin

SINGAPOREAN violinist Tang Tee Khoon, 25, is the new recipient of a rare Guadagnini violin under the National Arts Council's (NAC) instrument loan scheme.

Other promising musicians who wish to play a fine instrument can also do so in the future, as the council is setting up a $1-million seed fund to acquire new stringed instruments to loan out.

Try again for peace

NEW DELHI - INDIA'S Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Wednesday he wanted to try again to make peace with Pakistan, but stressed Islamabad needed to take 'strong and effective' action to end terrorism.

He said if the Pakistani leadership shows 'courage, determination and statesmanship to take the high road to peace, India will meet it more than half the way.'
