WASHINGTON - US PRESIDENT Barack Obama on Tuesday welcomed South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak to the White House, sending a signal of airtight ties with Seoul as North Korea's nuclear belligerence escalates.

Mr Lee arrived for the talks after indicating that he wants the United States to offer fresh guarantees that South Korea is under the US security umbrella, days after the United Nations slapped new nuclear sanctions on Pyongyang.

 
Two more cases reported

THE Ministry of Health late on Tuesday confirmed two more cases of Influenza A(H1N1) in Singapore, bringing the total number of confirmed cases here to 49.

Of the 49 infections reported, 48 are imported cases with a travel history. One patient was a close contact of a confirmed case.

Pump prices up again

PUMP prices have gone up again, in the latest of a series of price hikes over the past few months.

Charges for 95- and 98-octane petrol went up by four cents per litre and they now cost $1.767 and $1.87 respectively. The price for 92-octane fuel remained unchanged, at around $1.637 to $1.687 per litre.

Dream 2012 award for duo

TWO of Singapore's most promising Olympians, Tao Li, and Pang Xue Jie from the Singapore Sports School (SSP), have been awarded the Lord Sebastian Coe/British Chamber of Commerce 'Dream 2012 Award' for 2009/10.

Tao Li, 19, Singapore's first ever swimmer to enter an Olympic final during the Beijing Olympics in 2008, is a fourth-time winner while Pang Xue Jie, 16, a player in the national Olympic table tennis team, is a third-time recipient of the Dream 2012 award.

Senior JI detainee freed

SINGAPORE has released a 48-year-old man who was a senior member of the JI terror network here headed by Mas Selamat Kastari.

Arifin Ali, also known as John Wong Ah Hung, was freed and placed on a Restriction Order on Monday, said the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday.
