Obama lobbies doctors 3:42 AM

CHICAGO - PRESIDENT Barack Obama on Monday warned doctors the US healthcare system was a ticking time bomb and urged them to support his overhaul plan, which includes a public insurance program that many of them view with skepticism.

Mr Obama took his healthcare campaign to the annual meeting of the influential American Medical Association in Chicago, where he likened the US healthcare system to struggling General Motors, which has filed for bankruptcy protection.

WASHINGTON - THE Obama administration will target critical weaknesses in the troubled US financial system, such as thin bank capital cushions and eroded lending standards, when it proposes an overhaul of financial regulation this week, two senior officials said on Monday.

In the fullest summary to date of the administration's reform proposal, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers said the plan will also urge stronger consumer and investor protections and new powers for the Federal Reserve.

Dow dives amid worries 4:25 AM

NEW YORK - WALL Street stocks dived on Monday amid recovery worries fueled by the Group of Eight finance chiefs and profit taking led by a commodity sell-off.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 185.31 points (2.11 per cent) to 8,613.95 at the market close.

Tear gas fired at protest 8:17 PM

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN police on Monday fired several rounds of tear gas to break up a noisy protest held by Iranians residing here against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's controversial election victory.

Earlier more than 200 people gathered at the city's United Nations building to hand over a protest note demanding the world body nullify elections the Iranian opposition allege was rigged.
