IT only takes a spark to spread the message of love, and a group of local civil society activists is doing just that.

Sparked by an international campaign called The Charter for Compassion, the local movement aims to promote values such as compassion, mutual respect and tolerance.

 
26 drink drivers caught

SCORES of drink drivers were rounded up after a ringfencing operation was conducted early on Saturday morning, according to a statement releassed by the police.

Road blocks were set up along Neil Road, Tanjong Pagar Road, Maxwell Road, Kreta Ayer Road and Cantonment Road to ring-fence the cluster of entertainment outlets and drinking haunts in the vicinity at about 1.30am.

Ahmadinejad wins

TEHRAN- MAHMOUD Ahmadinejad has won Iran's most hotly contested presidential election with 62.63 per cent of the vote, Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli said on Saturday.

In second place behind the hardline incumbent was moderate ex-premier Mir Hossein Mousavi with 33.75 per cent vote, he said.

MM meets Penang minister

MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew on Saturday met Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and other state government leaders.

The Penang state government is keen to attract Singapore investments but Mr Lee offered his view that the state first needed better roads, bridges, airports and other communications links.

Blood donors honoured

MORE than 1,600 blood donors were honoured in Singapore at the annual World Blood Donor Day celebrations held at the Jurong Bird Park on Saturday.

For the first time, a Medal For Life award, presented to donors who have donated blood more than 200 times, was given out.
