DETROIT/WASHINGTON - GENERAL Motors filed for bankruptcy on Monday, forcing the 100-year-old automaker once seen as a symbol of American economic might and dynamism into a new and uncertain era of government ownership.

The bankruptcy filing is the fourth-largest in US history and the largest ever in US manufacturing.

NEW YORK - THE closely watched Dow Jones industrial average reshuffled the deck on Monday, removing both Citigroup and General Motors in a widely anticipated move.

The Dow consists of the 30 stocks that make up the best-known barometer of Wall Street (or the US economy).

NEW YORK - WALL Street stocks shot higher on Monday as a bullish mood on recovery from recession overshadowed a massive bankruptcy filing by General Motors.

The Dow vaulted 221.03 points (2.60 per cent) to 8,721.36 at the end of trade, the highest close for blue chips since early January.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE (California) - SPACE shuttle Atlantis has begun its ferry flight home from California to Florida.

A Nasa Boeing 747 carrying the shuttle took off from Edwards Air Force Base.
