SINGAPORE on Thursday raised the Mexican swine flu pandemic alert from Yellow to Orange, and will quarantine people who have been to Mexico recently and tighten infection control measures at hospitals.

Although there are no confirmed cases here, 22 people have been referred for medical assessment, of which 21 have been cleared of Influenza A and one is pending laboratory tests.

This is a global war

SINGAPORE should not be trapped in the Sars battle mindset, warned Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan on Thursday.

Giving the media a second update on the Mexican swine flu situation, he again took pains to drive home the point that the war against the H1N1 swine flu is different from fighting Sars six years ago.

Maximum fine for nudity

THE pair of undergraduates who sauntered through Holland Village in the buff in January have paid for their prank.

They were fined $2,000 each on Thursday, the maximum fine for an obscene act.

Court papers state that Eng Kai Er, 24, and Jan Philip, 21, did what they did 'to seek thrill'.

We can be quietly confident

AS SINGAPORE suffers its most severe recession, the people still have reason to be 'quietly confident' because the economy has important strengths, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

>Our banks are sound, our industries are competitive, our wage systems are flexible, and many good jobs are still available,' he said in his May Day message released on Thursday, a day ahead of Labour Day.

Unaware of kidney deal

FORMER CK Tang executive chairman Tang Wee Sung told a court on Thursday that a middleman had quoted him $300,000 for a kidney.

But he did not know if the middleman had any arrangement with his niece's husband, Whang Sung Lin, who is on trial for abetment.

The 56-year retiree was the prosecution's fourth and final witness at the trial of Whang, 44, who is expected to take the stand when hearing continues on Monday.
