GENEVA - OUTBREAKS of swine flu in Mexico and the United States have the potential to cause a worldwide pandemic but it is too early to say whether they will, the head of the World Health Organisation said on Saturday.

'It has pandemic potential because it is infecting people,' WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said.

 
Chef bags 3 prizes

CHEF Yong Bing Ngen was one busy man on Saturday.

No, he was not cooking but was called - three times - to come up on stage at the World Gourmet Summit Awards.

New rally in Bangkok

BANGKOK - HUNDREDS of anti-government protesters gathered for a rally in Bangkok on Saturday, a day after the prime minister lifted a state of emergency imposed amid violent demonstrations earlier this month.

The small protest at a downtown park is the first since supporters of ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra rampaged through the capital and clashed with troops on April 12 and 13, leaving two people dead and 123 injured.
