THE financial crisis is not just about regulatory failures but is in part due to an inherent culture of excessive leveraging within the sector and possibly a lack of oversight.

This view came from Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who advocated the need to heed the lessons of the crisis.

 
Tony Blair in NUS course

FORMER British prime minister Tony Blair will take part in a new course on religions at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

He will be the facilitator at one session in the new course, tentatively called Religions in the Contemporary World.

US Q4 GDP falls 6.3%

WASHINGTON - THE US economy contracted slightly more than previously estimated in the fourth quarter, pulled down by falling consumer spending and exports, while corporate profits plunged by the biggest margin since 1994, government data showed on Thursday.

Gross domestic product, which measures the total output of goods and services within US borders, fell at an annual rate of 6.3 per cent in the October-December quarter, the steepest decline since the first quarter of 1982, the department said.

PM renews Cabinet

PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong has reshuffled his Cabinet, making several changes and appointments as part of continuing leadership renewal.

The changes are also to test out younger office holders for broader responsibilities, said a statement from the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday.
