HOME Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng on Monday tabled a Bill in Parliament that will give the police greater powers to maintain public order, for example during major events like the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation summit which Singapore will host in November.

Protests and terrorist action are some of the threats that bedevil such mega events, which Singapore is increasingly hosting more of.

 
45,000 new job openings

AT LEAST 45,000 new jobs will be up for grabs in the next two years, with many of them suitable for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs).

In giving the update on Monday, Acting Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong also listed where they are to be found.

F1 tickets on sale April

TICKETS for the 2009 Formula SingTel Singapore Grand Prix will go on sale on April 9.

All grandstands, except for the Bay Grandstand, will be available then. The cheapest early bird ticket during this period is $498, which will get you a seat at the Padang or Esplanade Waterfront Grandstand.

The Pit grandstand, which was priced at $1,388 last year, is available at $1,188 for early birds.

Ion Orchard 80% full

WITH four months to its opening, Ion Orchard, one of three new malls on Orchard Road, is already more than 80 per cent full.

More than 60 per cent of the mall will be taken up by flagship stores, new-to-market brands and new concept stores.

Brands like Cartier, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Uniqlo, Topshop and Topman will showcase their collections in double-storey flagship stores.

Bad assets buyout unveiled

WASHINGTON - THE US Treasury unveiled a long-awaited plan on Monday to buy up toxic assets clogging the financial system using government funds and Federal Reserve backing to attract private capital.

The cornerstone of the plan is a 'Public-Private Investment Program for Legacy Assets' funded with US$75- US$100 billion from the government - an idea that has generated some praise but also skepticism.
