WASHINGTON - THE US trade deficit plunged in January to the lowest level in six years as a deepening recession cut demand for imported goods.

The Commerce Department said on Friday the trade imbalance dropped to US$36 billion (S$55.5 billion) in January, a decline of 9.7 percent from December and the lowest level since October 2002.

 
Creative cuts 300 jobs

CREATIVE Technology is cutting about 300 jobs worldwide, with most to go from Europe and the United States, it announced on Friday night.

Creative was not available to comment on how many Singapore employees will be axed in Singapore, where it has its corporate headquarters and a large part of its research and development (R&D) operations.

A 'very dangerous year'

LONDON - WORLD Bank president Robert Zoellick said on Friday that 2009 was turning into 'a very dangerous year' for the global economy.

'2009 is shaping up to be a very dangerous year,' he told reporters ahead of Saturday's G20 finance ministers meeting on how best to tackle the worst economic slowdown in decades.

WSJ editor faces contempt

THE Government is taking a senior editor of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) to court, accusing her of being in contempt of court in three articles published last year.

In the High Court on Friday, Justice Tay Yong Kwang granted an application by the Attorney-General to start proceedings against Ms Melanie Kirkpatrick, deputy editor of the New York-based financial daily's editorial page.

'I was alarmed by threat'

MEMBER of Parliamanet for Jalan Besar GRC Denise Phua said she felt alarmed after finding out about a verbal threat by a resident in her ward to 'hit' her.

She took the stand for the first time on Friday, on the third day trial of Ng Kim Ngweng, 49, a rag-and-bone man, who allegedly threatened to cause her hurt in a telephone message to a government hotline on Jan 12.
