MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew on Saturday called on new citizens to play an active part to fit in. Integration is a two-way street, he said, urging them to make an effort to reach out to Singaporeans.

'Singaporeans will embrace you if you want to be embraced. Make the effort to meet Singaporeans more than halfway and they will respond positively,' he said during a brief address at the Tanjong Pagar GRC citizenship ceremony.

A WISH list for senior citizens living in any housing estate would surely include flattened road kerbs and covered drains to enhance wheelchair access.

Also in demand would be tactile road markings in bright colours to highlight changes in levels and directions, gentle slopes and ramps to mitigate changes in levels and slip-resistant service roads and footpaths facing shops.

Britain takes 65% of Lloyds

LONDON - THE British government has become a majority shareholder in Lloyds Banking Group PLC in exchange for insuring more than 260 billion pounds (S$567 billion) in risky assets, the bank said on Saturday.

The deal raises the government's interest in the group from 43.5 per cent to at least 65 per cent. As a condition of the deal, the bank promised to increase lending by 28 billion pounds over the next two years, the majority to businesses.

NTU staff found hanged

THE Nanyang Technological University project officer, who was found hanged in a staff apartment at the NTU campus on Friday night, had just started work five days ago.

Mr Zhou Zheng, 24, a Chinese national from Hubei, who worked for the Division of Information at the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), was pronounced dead in his flat at Block 101C Nanyang Heights at about 10.50pm.

124 protestors detained

KUALA LUMPUR - RIOT police fired tear gas to disperse more than 2,000 Malaysians who tried to march to the national palace on Saturday to protest the use of English to teach math and science.

The demonstrators sought to submit a petition to the country's king to demand that the national Malay language be reinstated in schools for the two subjects - a sensitive issue for the ethnic Malay majority.
