Violence flares 9:40 PM

EL-QLAYLEH (Lebanon) - ISRAEL shelled southern Lebanon on Saturday after a rocket slammed into its territory in a tit-for-tat exchange of fire across their tense border, sources on both sides said.

Israeli rescue services said three people were injured when the rocket struck near the town of Maalot in the western Galilee region, triggering an immediate response from Israel.

WASHINGTON - AFTER launching an unprecedented spending programme aimed at forestalling a meltdown of the US economy, US President Barack Obama vowed on Saturday to put an equal effort into tackling trillion dollar deficits facing the nation.

In his weekly radio address, Mr Obama said that he and his administration were determined to do 'all we can to get exploding deficits under control as our economy begins to recover'. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the provisional US budget deficit in fiscal 2009 will balloon to a record US$1.2 trillion (S$1.8 trillion).

BEIJING - US SECRETARY of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chinese officials say they will expand high-level talks on economic issues to include troubling security matters as well.

The two nations also agreed on Saturday to cooperate in stabilising the global economy and combating climate change, putting aside long-standing concerns about human rights.

Virgin to rescue Honda? 6:48 PM

LONDON - RICHARD Branson's Virgin Group could take over Honda's Formula One team if certain conditions were met, the British entrepreneur said on Saturday.

Speaking for the first time about his company's reported Honda bid, Branson said it would be fun to join Formula One but would not be drawn on whether talks were ongoing with the British-based Japanese team.
