IN THE last 10 years, fewer than 10 Singaporean sportsmen and musicians have been given permission to defer their full-time national service.

These deferments are often sought when the young men want to pursue their studies, training or represent Singapore in International competitions.

 
Dedicated cycling paths

RESIDENTS in five neighbourhoods will be the first to get cycling paths under a $43 million programme. Tampines residents will get theirs by the second half of this year while paths in Yishun will be built by next year. Sembawang, Pasir Ris and Taman Jurong will also get cycling paths later.

These paths will either be up to 2m wide dedicated ones or clearly marked lanes as part of pedestrian footpaths.

5 new stations open in May

FIVE stations on the new Circle Line will open to the public on May 30, which is slightly earlier than expected. This was announced by Transport Minister Raymond Lim in Parliament on Thursday.

The five stations are Marymount, Bishan, Lorong Chuan, Serangoon and Bartley. The stations were originally planned to open in June.

Tata opens data centre

INDIAN communications provider Tata Communications on Thursday announced plans to build a US$180 million Internet data centre in Singapore that promises to create at least 50 jobs.

The Tata Communications Exchange, as it is called, will be housed in Paya Lebar Business Park and will be ready for operation early next year.

$123m to help firms grow

COMPANIES looking to export and expand overseas can tap multi-million dollar training programmes and financing schemes offered by the Singapore Government.

International Enterprise Singapore (IE) said on Thursday that it will set aside $123 million over two years to step up training programmes for staff of some 10,000 companies to grow their companies overseas and better tap export markets.
