THE 2009 Budget largely tackles the downturn through supply-side initiatives like helping to save jobs. But do not forget about stimulating demand as well to keep the economy chugging along, reminded five MPs on Tuesday.

Their suggestions range from a cut in the goods and services tax (GST) to giving out 'consumption coupons' for Singaporeans to spend at retail outlets.

Lively debate on jobs credit

SIX MPs - five of whom were from the labour movement - took opposition MP Low Thia Khiang on Tuesday over his criticisms of the Jobs Credit scheme.

In a lively exchange that was a highlight in the debate on the Budget Statement, the MPs took turns disputing the Hougang MP's critical comments of the wage-subsidy scheme.

MPs laud use of reserves

Sports Hub hits snag

THE Singapore Sports Hub Consortium (SSHC) is facing difficulty in securing funds to start the Kallang Sports Hub due to the credit crunch.

The project has already faced several delays.

The Government has stepped in and is in 'active discussion' with the consortium to address the issue and also on how to get Singapore's biggest sports project moving, said Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), in Parliament on Tuesday.

'Despicable' act

BEIJING - CHINA on Tuesday condemned a shoe-throwing protest targeting Premier Wen Jiabao in England as "despicable" and said it had registered its annoyance with the British government.

However the Chinese foreign ministry stressed bilateral ties would not be damaged and acknowledged British police had taken action over the incident that occurred as Mr Wen gave a speech at Cambridge University on Monday.
