CAIRO (Egypt) - AL-QAEDA chief Osama bin Laden urged Muslims to launch a jihad against Israel and condemned Arab governments as allies of the Jewish state in a new message aimed at harnessing anger in the Mideast over the Gaza offensive.

Bin Laden spoke in an audiotape posted on Wednesday on Islamic militant websites where Al-Qaeda usually issues its messages. It was his first tape since May and came nearly three weeks after Israel started its campaign against Gaza's militant Hamas rulers.

 
S'pore jobs likely hit

BRITISH banking giant Barclays said on Tuesday that it will cut 2,100 jobs in its investment banking and wealth management units, with some positions in Singapore at risk.

Barclays' operations in Singapore include Barclays Capital, Barclays Wealth Management and Barclays Global Investors, employing more than 2,500 bankers and back-end staff in total.

Kaka douses transfer talk

ROME - BRAZILIAN superstar Kaka on Wednesday dismissed speculation linking him with mega-rich Manchester City by claiming that he wants to grow old at AC Milan.

Earlier in the day English newspaper reports claimed City had made a staggering world record offer of 100 million euros ($196.9 million) for the former World Player of the Year.

'Sight is shocking'

BREAKING their silence for the first time after Sunday's attack on Yio Chu Kang MP Seng Han Thong, his family on Wednesday issued a statement to the media to express their thanks and appreciation to all who have shown care and concern to him since he was hospitalised.

The statement, issued by Mrs Seng and family, also touched on how they are coping with the 'despair and extreme stress' following what they described as 'an unfortunate incident'.

China is world's 3rd largest

BEIJING - CHINA issued revised data for 2007 on Wednesday that showed its economy has surpassed Germany to become the world's third-largest behind the US and Japan.

The status is symbolic - China's 1.3 billion people are, on average, among the world's poorest - but reflects the country's explosive growth as it became the world's factory and a trading power over 30 years of economic reform.
