WASHINGTON - PRESIDENT George W. Bush mounted a defiant and emotional defense of his 'good, strong record' on Monday, rejecting criticism of his 'war on terror' tactics and policy in Iraq and on the economy.

In his last formal news conference before ceding power to Barack Obama on January 20, Mr Bush highlighted the 'troop surge' in Iraq and his efforts to rescue the US economy as it slumped into the worst recession since the 1930s.

Punched on stage

Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Sakaruddin Che Mood confirmed a report had been lodged over the incident, saying police were looking for Dr Yap's assailant, believed to be a former student.

Support for changes

MORE than eight in 10 Singaporeans support moves to change organ transplant laws to make more organs available and to punish organ traders more severely, a Health Ministry survey has found.

The majority were in favour even of the most controversial proposal to allow the reimbursement of living organ donors. And when it came to reimbursing organ donors, three in four felt that they should be given at least $50,000.

Curriculum change helped

OF THE 35 top Secondary 4 Chinese students in last year's GCE O-level examination, about one-third came from Catholic High School. All 12 of them scored nine A1s, a jump from last year, when only three Catholic High students made it to the list of top Secondary 4 Chinese students.

Catholic High's principal Lee Hak Boon attributed the marked improvement partly to a new curriculum the school adopted in 2006.
