JERUSALEM - ISRAEL postponed on Wednesday a decision on whether to order its armed forces to storm the Gaza Strip's urban centres, an Israeli official said, citing Egyptian- and French-led efforts to secure a truce with Hamas.

Escalating from a week-long air assault, Israeli troops and tanks invaded the coastal enclave on Saturday, clashing with Palestinian guerrillas but not advancing beyond the outskirts of the city of Gaza or other densely populated areas.

 
Neighbours shocked

NEIGHBOURS of two-year-old Natalie Nikie Alisyia Sallehan were shocked over her death.

They were also taken aback to hear that the toddler's 26-year-old father had been arrested for her death, which has been classified as murder by the police.

Fire victim laid to rest

MORE than 200 people packed a hall at the Mandai Crematorium on Wednesday for the funeral of Mr Teo Sze Siong, who died last week in a devastating fire at a Bangkok nightclub.

The 38-year-old air-traffic controller was one of 64 people who lost their lives in the Jan 1 blaze at the Santika Club.

He never got Mom's SMS

THE mother of Bangkok pub fire victim Lu Weiye thought nothing of it when she did not get a reply to an SMS she sent to him jut after midnight on New Year's Day wishing him 'Happy New Year'.

But when she read newspaper reports the next day of the blaze at the Santika pub, she frantically tried to reach him on the phone to no avail.

Satyam hit by US$1b scam

MUMBAI - THE head of one of India's biggest outsourcing firms, Satyam Computer, resigned on Wednesday amid a scandal over a billion dollar fraud that sent company stocks into freefall.

Company founder and chairman B. Ramalinga Raju admitted the Hyderabad-based software services firm had falsified accounts and assets and inflated its profits over several years.
