WASHINGTON - US president-elect Barack Obama on Saturday signaled climate change and genetic research will be among his top priorities when he takes office as he named four key members of his administration.

'It's time we once again put science at the top of our agenda and worked to restore America's place as the world leader in science and technology,' said Mr Obama in a weekly radio address.

 
Abhisit unveils cabinet

BANGKOK - THAILAND'S new prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva unveiled his cabinet on Saturday aimed at building reconciliation and reviving the economy, but the ministerial line-up has already stoked tensions.

The cabinet list was announced after King Bhumibol Adulyadej signed a royal command approving the ministers, five days after Abhisit won a parliamentary vote to bring a coalition led by the Democrat Party into power.

Hotels prepare to reopen

MUMBAI - FINAL preparations were taking place in Mumbai on Saturday to prepare the two luxury hotels stormed by Islamist militants for reopening, amid tight security and pledges to return to business as usual.

The modern Tower wing of the Taj Mahal hotel and all of the nearby Trident hotel are due to relaunch on Sunday, less than a month after the devastating attacks that left 172 people, including nine of the gunmen, dead.

Officials can visit China

TAIPEI - TAIWAN will soon allow senior Cabinet officials to visit China, and is considering lifting a ban on military personnel traveling to the mainland, a government official said on Saturday.

The statement by Mainland Affairs Council spokesman Liu Te-shun, a Cabinet-level agency in charge of implementing Taiwan's China policy, is the latest step in rapidly warming ties between Taiwan and rival China.

Hunt for foreign debtors

SHANGHAI- CHINA, hit by a slowdown in manufacturing from the global downturn, will pursue foreign investors who flee the country to escape failed business investments and debt, the Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.

China will ask foreign governments to help investigate and extradite the fugitives, especially in cases involving large sums of money, the official news agency said.
