ABOUT 200 more childcare centres are in the pipeline, and will be ready in about five years.

This will bring the number of places from about 63,000 in 739 centres as at Jan, to about 83,000 in 940 centres.

It is also an increase of 10,000 places or 100 childcare centres, on top of what the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) had announced earlier this year in March.

Japan's economy minister said recession in the world's second-biggest economy could last longer than feared and falling UK inflation, and the prospect of the same in the United States, paved the way for further interest rate cuts.

More workers covered

The changes, proposed in September, are to keep pace with a changing labour market with rising salaries and more white-collar workers, said Acting Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong .
