TAIPEI - FORMER Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian was taken from his jail cell to a hospital on Sunday after a five-day hunger strike when a doctor found an irregular heartbeat, a prison official said.

Lee Ta-chu, an official at Tucheng Jail where Chen had been held since last Wednesday for investigation on graft allegations, told The Associated Press a prison doctor recommended Chen's hospitalization after examining him.

 
Change must come to PAP

CHANGE must come to Singapore - but within the ruling People's Action Party rather than in the form of having a two-party system.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday stressed that the PAP must constantly evolve to keep up with the times. This means renewing its membership and leadership ranks, and coming up with fresh ways to engage Singaporeans.

INSTEAD of waiting till February to unveil help measures for businesses and workers, the Government will be announcing some within the week.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Sunday the Government will announce 'this week' a loan scheme for businesses, and new training programme for workers.

Singh grabs US$5m victory

INDIA'S Jeev Milkha Singh thanked the 'golfing gods' after clinching the Singapore Open on Sunday by a shot from Ireland's Padraig Harrington and South Africa's Ernie Els in a dramatic finish.

Harrington needed to sink a five foot putt at the last to force a play-off but pushed his shot right, and then Els, in the group behind, had to do the same but his 15 footer curled round the lip of the hole.

Iraq okays US military pact

BAGHDAD - IRAQ'S Cabinet on Sunday approved a security pact with the United States that will allow American forces to stay in Iraq for three years after their UN mandate expires at the end of the year.

The decision followed months of difficult negotiations and, pending parliamentary approval, will remove a major point of contention between the two allies. Parliament's deputy speaker, Khalid Al-Attiyah, said he expected the 275-member legislature to begin debating the document this week and vote on it by Nov 24.
