PETIONVILLE (Haiti) - RESCUE crews working under the glare of floodlights dug through the rubble of a collapsed school early on Saturday in a frantic search for students who may still trapped in a disaster that has already killed at least 47 people.

It was not known how many students were in the school when it collapsed Friday morning. But authorities said roughly 500 children and teenagers typically crowded into the three-storey concrete building of College La Promesse, which served classes from kindergarten through high school.

Wok this way

LITTLE India is not only a hotspot for fish-head curry lovers.

At least seven non-Indian food and beverage outlets have opened there in the last 18 months.

The establishments include French restaurant The Black Sheep Cafe in Mayo Street and Western vegetarian outlet Cafe Salivation in Syed Alwi Road.

Bloody murders

KILLINGS of Chinese nationals by their own countrymen here seem to be making newspaper headlines regularly.

Recently, two peidu mamas were killed.

Last week, a young man was stabbed by his flatmate.

What are the reasons for the murderous rage?

No minority S'pore PM yet

SINGAPORE may have a non-Chinese Prime Minister one day but that is unlikely to happen anytime soon, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Saturday, four days after Americans elected their first African-American president.

Mr Lee said race is still a factor that determines voters' preferences here, although he noted this is shifting.

Sign of the times

SUDDENLY, it seems, many people are doing it - either starting or signing online and offline petitions.

The issues are varied - from calling on banks to compensate investors of risky products to clamouring for lower transport fares for polytechnic students.

But how effective are these petitions?
