NEW DELHI - INDIAN Prime Minister Manmohan Singh apologised on Wednesday to the widow of a man who was prevented from receiving emergency treatment because the premier was touring the hospital.

Singh wrote in a letter that he had heard desperately ill S. Verma 'could not get access (to the hospital) in time because of the restrictions in place for my visit there.'

 
Struggle to fill Bird Nest

BEIJING - CHINESE officials continue to struggle to find uses for the Bird's Nest Stadium, the iconic centrepiece of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Finding new events for the 80,000-seat venue is a constant problem, Mr Zhou Bin, the stadium's director of research and development, was quoted as saying on Wednesday in the official China Daily newspaper.

Taiwan's Chen's assets frozen

TAIPEI - A TAIWAN court has frozen the domestic assets of former president Chen Shui-bian, intending to use them to pay off a fine he was handed on top of a life jail term for graft, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

'The assets include money deposited in the Chen family's domestic bank accounts, shares, houses and land,' Mr Chen Yun-nan, a spokesman of the Taipei district court, told AFP.
