URUMQI (China) - CHINESE police shot dead 12 Uighur rioters in Xinjiang this month, regional governor Nuer Baikeli said on Saturday, in a rare government admission of deaths inflicted by security forces.

In Xinjiang's worst ethnic unrest in decades, Uighurs attacked majority Han Chinese in regional capital Urumqi on July 5 after taking to the streets to protest against an ethnic clash at a factory in south China in June which left two Uighurs dead.

 
China quarantines 52 students

BEIJING - A GROUP of 52 British students and their teachers have been quarantined by Chinese authorities after four students tested positive for H1N1 flu, the British Council said on Saturday.

Group threatens China

BEIJING - AN OFFSHOOT of a secessionist group with ties to Al-Qaeda is threatening revenge for the deaths of Muslim Uighurs in clashes with Chinese earlier this month, a US group that monitors militant Web sites said.

The Washington-based SITE Intelligence Group said a video released this week by the Turkistan Islamic Party condemned the July 5 violence between Chinese and Uighurs in the Xinjiang region which stemmed from a brawl between the two sides in southern China in June.

Mumbai attackers trial adjourned

ISLAMABAD - THE trial in Pakistan of the five accused of involvement in last year's terror attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai has been adjourned until next week, the defence lawyer said on Saturday.
