Exhume women's bodies

SRINAGAR - THE high court in Indian-administered Kashmir on Saturday directed the police to exhume the bodies of two women whose alleged rape and murder last month sparked massive anti-India demonstrations.

China punishes officials

BEIJING - CHINESE authorities have punished six government officials after three baby girls whose parents were still alive were sent to an orphanage in southern China that subsequently put them up for adoption overseas, state media and an official said.

300,000 homes flooded

GAUHATI (India) - INDIAN paramilitary rescue teams rushed Saturday to an island in one of Asia's largest rivers, where nearly 100,000 people took refuge after heavy monsoon rains flooded their homes, said a local administrator.

Nearly 300,000 people in remote northeastern Assam state have seen their homes flooded in three days of nonstop monsoon rain, said state Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman.
