BEIJING - CHINA has 100 confirmed cases of swine flu, state media said on Tuesday, as data from the World Health Organization showed the disease had spread to 73 countries.

 
30 hurt in rape protests

SRINAGAR (India) - THIRTY protesters were hurt on Tuesday when police fired shots in the air and teargas during fresh protests in Indian Kashmir over the alleged rape and murder of two Muslim women, police said.

The injuries were reported in southern Pulwama district where riot police used force to disperse hundreds of stone-throwing students 'to maintain law and order', a police officer said. 'Three of the injured are in critical condition,' he said.

Use simplified characters

TAIPEI - PRESIDENT Ma Ying-jeou on Tuesday suggested that Taiwan adopt the simplified character set used in writing in China, in yet another indication of the island's moving closer to its former arch-rival.

Anti-terror laws extended

COLOMBO - SRI Lanka's government on Tuesday extended tough anti-terror laws, arguing that remnants of the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels could still try to stage a comeback.
