SEOUL - NORTH Korea threatened military action on Wednesday against US and South Korean warships plying the waters near the Koreas' disputed maritime border, raising the specter of a naval clash just days after the regime's underground nuclear test.

Pyongyang, reacting angrily to Seoul's decision to join an international program to intercept ships suspected of aiding nuclear proliferation, called the move tantamount to a declaration of war.

 
UN slams Pakistan blast

UNITED NATIONS - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sharply condemned Wednesday's deadly bombing in the Pakistani city of Lahore, his office said in a statement.

'The Secretary General strongly condemns the bombing today in Lahore, Pakistan, in which some 30 people were reported killed and 250 wounded,' the UN statement said, adding 'no cause can justify such indiscriminate terrorist violence.'

SEOUL - FORMER South Korean president Roh Moo-Hyun leapt to his death during a mountain hike after sending his bodyguard away on an errand, police said on Wednesday, as tens of thousands joined in mourning for him.
