WASHINGTON - US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has decided to replace the top US and Nato commander in Afghanistan, US Army General David McKiernan, less than a year after he took over the war effort there, officials said on Monday.

Officials said Gen McKiernan will be replaced by Army Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal, who is currently director of the US military's Joint Staff.

 
UN airlift for Pakistan

GENEVA - THE UN refugee agency says it will airlift 120 tons of relief supplies to help Pakistanis fleeing fighting in their country.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said 'the speed and scale' of the human exodus require an immediate response.

US$5m for displaced Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD - THE United States said on Monday that it would provide US5 million (S$7.5 million) in emergency aid for families displaced by the current anti-Taliban offensive in northwest Pakistan.

UN officials say more than 360,000 people have been uprooted after ground and air operations began over a week ago against Taliban strongholds in the scenic valley of Swat and adjoining areas.

Won't give in to N.Korea

TOKYO- JAPAN and the United States agreed not to give in to North Korea's provocations but to patiently pursue the resumption of nuclear disarmament talks, a Japanese envoy said on Monday.
