SRINAGAR (India) - INDIAN police and paramilitary forces locked down Kashmir's summer capital on Wednesday to prevent anti-election demonstrations after protests flared overnight.

Troops patrolled the deserted streets of Srinagar, the urban hub of a nearly two-decade-old revolt against New Delhi's rule of the Muslim-majority state.

 
Man sets himself on fire

BEIJING - A MAN is in serious condition after setting himself on fire in a crowded square in a southern Chinese city.

Xinhua News Agency says the man used flammable liquid to set himself alight in Chongqing's bustling Liberation Monument Square around noon Wednesday.

No Sri Lanka truce
