WASHINGTON - INDIA on Monday warned it would oppose the UN treaty banning nuclear tests, calling it disciminatory, despite President Barack Obama's hopes that the US will ratify it.

Shyam Saran, India's special envoy on nuclear issues, conceded on a visit to Washington that the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) could prove to be a 'contentious' issue with the new US administration.

 
25 killed in Iraq suicide attack

BAGHDAD - AT LEAST 25 people were killed and 50 wounded in a suicide bomb attack as a Kurdish family was receiving condolences northeast of the Iraqi capital on Monday, local officials said.

The attack took place in Jalawla, 130 kilometres from Baghdad.

Policemen killed in suicide attack

ISLAMABAD - A GOVERNMENT official says a suicide bomber has blown himself up close to a police station in the Pakistani capital, killing himself and two officers.

The blast late Monday was heard throughout downtown Islamabad.

Top PLO official killed

SIDON (Lebanon) - A TOP Palestinian official and three other people were killed in a roadside bombing outside a restive refugee camp in southern Lebanon on Monday.

Senior Palestine Liberation Organisation official Kamal Medhat, two of his bodyguards and another Palestinian official were travelling in a convoy when the bomb exploded at the entrance to the Mieh Mieh camp near the coastal town of Sidon, an army spokesman told AFP.
