TOJINBO (Japan) - RETIRED policeman Yukio Shige is still on patrol, walking daily along the Tojinbo cliff, one of the best-known suicide spots in Japan where he pursues a private mission to prevent people leaping.

Mr Shige's method of persuading someone to stay alive is quite simple, he said.

 
Foreign workers to be cut

TAIPEI - TAIWAN plans to cut the number of foreign labourers working on the island in a bid to create jobs for locals amid the economic downturn, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

The Economics Ministry has proposed barring major public projects from employing foreign workers, the United Daily News reported. It also proposed offering subsidies to manufacturers that employ Taiwanese workers.

Day to mark defeat of uprising

BEIJING - CHINESE-BACKED Tibetan leaders will soon set a date for what they call 'Serf Liberation Day' to mark the defeat 50 years ago of a pro-independence uprising in the Himalayan region, state media reported on Sunday.

A holiday to mark the 'emancipation of millions of serfs and slaves' in Tibet will be decided on during a meeting of the region's legislature starting on Wednesday, Xinhua News Agency said.
