ISLAMABAD - PAKISTAN on Tuesday called for talks with India to defuse tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours, as New Delhi denied claims it had moved troops into offensive positions on the border.

The comments from the foreign ministers of the south Asian rivals were the latest in a series of tit-for-tat responses since the Mumbai attacks that India blamed on Pakistan-based militants, triggering a deterioration in relations.

 
Ordered to end protest

SEOUL - THE parliament speaker ordered opposition lawmakers camped out inside the National Assembly to end their five-day protest, warning on Tuesday he would send in guards to force them out if they refused to leave.

Dozens of lawmakers from the opposition Democratic Party have been occupying the main hall of the National Assembly since Friday to prevent the ruling Grand National Party from forcing through dozens of bills before year's end, including a controversial free trade deal with the US.

300 immigrants feared dead

NEW DELHI - THE Indian Coast Guard rescued two people off India's east coast during a search for more than 300 illegal immigrants missing for the past four days and feared dead, police said on Tuesday.

At least 10 bodies have washed ashore near the Andaman Islands, said S.P. Sharma, the Coast Guard inspector-general on the islands.

NKorea's 1st foreign uni delayed

SEOUL - NORTH Korea's first foreign-funded university is finally expected to open next year after being delayed by international tensions, the foundation behind the landmark project said Tuesday.
